UMBC Campus Resources for Social Work Students

The following campus offices and services are available to support
your academic success, financial needs, and enrollment at UMBC. Click
any resource below to visit the office’s website or access their
services directly.

Academic Support

  • Academic Success Center (ASC) — offers tutoring, student skill assistance,
    academic petitions, academic advocates, and the most up-to-date
    information on fall academic policies.

    • Academic Advocates are available for
      students experiencing multiple issues related to their
      academic success. Students can sign up for an appointment
      directly through the ASC website; faculty may also refer
      students to an advocate.
    • Petitions for academic policy (course
      repeats, late drop/adds) are submitted through the
      Academic Success Center.
  • Counseling Center — provides confidential counseling sessions, as well as workshops
    on time management, stress management, and study skills.
  • Career Center — assists students in exploring career paths for UMBC majors, securing
    internships, and conducting career and graduate school searches.

Enrollment and Financial Services

  • Financial Aid Office — information on scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study
    opportunities.
  • Student Business Services (SBS) — contact SBS for questions about tuition costs,
    billing, refunds, and student financial holds.
  • Graduation Information — steps and requirements for
    completing and applying for graduation through the Registrar’s
    Office.
  • Exceptions to Enrollment Policies — submit requests for late drops, late
    course withdrawals, late semester withdrawals, and time conflict
    exceptions through the Registrar’s forms page.
  • Degree Audit Issues and Substitutions — faculty submit help tickets
    through the Registrar’s contact page for degree audit
    corrections and course substitutions.
  • Registration Issues — students submit help tickets through the
    Registrar’s contact page for registration problems.

Advising and Transfer Resources

  • Pre-Allied Health Advising — part of the Office of Academic and
    Pre-Professional Advising (OAPA), supporting students
    interested in allied health career pathways.
  • Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Advising — advising and resources for students pursuing
    medical or dental school.
  • Transfer Course Equivalencies — visit the Registrar’s Transfer Services
    page to look up how transfer credits apply to your degree.
  • Verification of Transferability (VOT) — for taking courses at another institution and transferring credits
    back to UMBC, submit the VOT form through the Registrar’s forms page.

    • Advisors only need to sign the VOT for credits counting
      toward the major or minor.
    • To determine course equivalency at a Maryland community
      college, use ARTSYS.
    • For courses outside Maryland community colleges, submit
      a copy of the course syllabus with the Course Equivalency
      Form.
