Advising

Students are advised by social work faculty. All current Social Work students are assigned to a faculty advisor.

Declared SOWK students can check their advisor assignment in MyUMBC by selecting “Advising and Student Support” under the Guide section, then clicking on “My Advisor.”

If you do not know your advising contact information, please contact Aurora Rivera, our Administrative Assistant (aurorar2@umbc.edu).

Students MUST be advised before registering for the semester.  Be on the lookout for advising announcements from the department via the listserv so you know when it’s time to meet with your faculty advisor.  The time and day you can register for classes will depend on your credits.  You can check your registration day and time through the Registrar’s page. Please keep in mind that you may be advised before you can officially register; do not wait to see your advisor.

If it is your first semester at UMBC, you will first be advised at a selected orientation date. Please reach out to the Social Work Program after orientation to confirm the assigned advisor for your remaining semesters.

The department uses Google Calendar. When it’s time for advising to begin, you will receive an email containing a link to your advisor’s advising appointments. Select an appointment time and hit save.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CALENDAR IS ON EASTERN STANDARD TIME.
This can be changed in calendar settings.

Make sure that you’re using Google Calendar through your UMBC email address (ends in umbc.edu, not gmail.com).

You should get an email notification once your appointment is made (so will your advisor).  Notifications can be adjusted.  If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so on your calendar and “notify all guests” of your cancellation so your advisor is aware.

If you do not receive an email with a link, please get in touch with the department (410-455-2144). You cannot register for Fall or Spring courses until you have had advising.

If you have trouble using the calendar or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the main office!

Schedule of Classes

The Office of the Registrar provides a Schedule of Classes that allows you to easily find classes for the existing semester–and for any future semesters–when registrations become available.

Note that the course subject needs to be SOWK for undergraduate courses.

Use the following this tool to plan out a potential schedule for your advising appointment.  Students who are unprepared for their advising appointment may be asked to reschedule.
