Advising & Registration

Advising Expectations

All declared Social Work students are assigned to a faculty advisor.
You must be advised before registering for the semester.

Declared SOWK students can check their advisor assignment in MyUMBC by
selecting “Advising and Student Support” under the Guide section, then clicking on “My Advisor.”

If you do not know your advising contact information, please
contact Aurora Rivera, Administrative Assistant.

How to Schedule Your Advising Appointment

Watch for advising announcements from the department via the listserv.
When advising opens, you will receive an email with a link to your
advisor’s Google Calendar appointment page.

Make sure you are signed into Google Calendar using your UMBC email
address (ending in umbc.edu, not gmail.com), and that
your calendar timezone is set to Eastern Time (check under calendar settings).

Select an available time, save the appointment, and you will receive
an email confirmation — your advisor will too.

If you need to cancel, do so through your calendar and choose
“notify all guests” so your advisor is informed.

If you do not receive an email with the advising link, call the
department at 410-455-2144. If you have trouble with the calendar,
contact the main office for help.

First-Semester Students

If this is your first semester at UMBC, you will be advised at a
selected orientation date. After orientation, please reach out to the
Social Work Program to confirm your assigned advisor for future
semesters.

Registration Timing

Your registration day and time depends on your credit count. You can
check your specific registration window on the Registrar’s page.

You may be advised before your registration window
opens — do not wait to see your advisor.

Schedule of Classes

The Office of the Registrar provides a
Schedule of Classes (opens in new tab)
to help you find courses for current and upcoming semesters. Use this
tool to plan a potential schedule before your advising
appointment. Students who arrive unprepared may be asked to
reschedule.

When searching, set the course subject to SOWK for undergraduate Social Work courses.
