The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) is one of the oldest and largest graduate schools of social work in Maryland.  As one of six University of Maryland, Baltimore professional schools and an interdisciplinary School of Graduate Studies, UMSSW educates the majority of social workers in Maryland through 3 graduate degree programs and a robust offering of continuing professional education workshops and certificates.

Master of Social Work (MSW) Program
UMSSW has multiple MSW program options – 60-credit hybrid, 60-credit online,36-credit hybrid advanced standing, and 36-credit online advanced standing – and
two areas of concentration – Clinical and Leadership, Policy and Social Change (formerly Macro) – across three campus locations – Baltimore, The Universities at
Shady Grove, and Online. UMBC BSW graduates can earn their MSW in 1-2 years through the University of Maryland School of Social Work’s Advanced Standing Programs. Learn more about

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program
The UMSSW PhD Program is a 53-credit program that prepares graduate students to conduct interdisciplinary research and become exemplary social work scholars and educators. Located on the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s campus, the PhD program is designed for students who already have an MSW degree and want to launch a research-focused career. Doctor of Social Work (DSW) Program

UMSSW’s new DSW Program is a cohort-based, three-year, advanced practice doctorate designed for experienced social workers seeking to deepen their expertise in five core areas: clinical practice, teaching, supervision, leadership, and applied research. An MSW and at least two years of social work experience are required to apply to this program. Students will participate in person in courses on UMSSW’s Baltimore campus one weekend per month during the fall and spring semesters. Learn more about the UMSSW DSW Program.
