Virtual Webinar: Being There: Awareness and Support for Domestic Violence

This one (1) hour live interactive training is designed for individuals seeking an understanding of domestic violence and appropriate response strategies. This workshop provides an overview of how to recognize and respond to individuals experiencing domestic violence, as well as those who may be using harmful or abusive behaviors. Attendees will learn common signs of domestic violence and basic indicators of increased risk, along with an overview of how domestic violence impacts individuals, families and communities. Participants will be introduced to trauma-informed communication techniques to support effective and respectful conversations with individuals experiencing abuse. It also covers the basics of safety planning and explores local and national resources available to support individuals affected by domestic violence, including those seeking help to change harmful behaviors.

UMBC and UMB Social Work Career and Networking Reception 2026

 

Join us for a joint UMBC and UMB Social Work Career and Networking Reception at the Universities at Shady Grove on Thursday, March 26 from 6 -7:30 p.m. The event will include an opportunity to network with alumni and students, connect with social work agencies that have job openings and discuss employment opportunities, and learn about ways to connect with the School of Social Work. Refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

The program will include remarks at 6:45 p.m. by Dr. Judy Postmus, Dean and Professor, University of Maryland School of Social Work and Dr. Shelly Wiechelt, Chair and Associate Dean, UMBC Social Work program. Please consider nominating a social work colleague or supervisor for the Outstanding Alumni Award Presentation.

We will be loading, transporting, and stocking boxes of food in the pantry of Retriever Essentials to help those facing food insecurity. This event will be held from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Friday, March 6th, 2026.
We will meet outside of the bookstore, right next door to Retriever Essentials in the Commons of UMBC’s campus. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended! No prior experience needed.
